•           Take enough water: Allow 6 litres/person/day in the summer when temperatures can reach shade temperatures of up to 50C. Take extra water for the vehicle. •           Snakes are the dangerous animal which most foreigners first associate with Australia. They are rare and shy though: they won't attack unless cornered. Saltwater crocodiles on the other hand are both aggressive and territorial. In northern Australia don't camp too near a saltie.

•           Beer bottles are heavy to carry. Beer cans are better - but cans can get holes in them from the continual vibration from dirt roads. Avoid this by wrapping every second can in newspaper to avoid rubbing.
