Travel to Australia and Camping in Australia - Easy and Comfortable
• Take enough water: Allow
6 litres/person/day in the summer when temperatures can reach shade
temperatures of up to 50C. Take extra water for the vehicle. Take water in
multiple containers: they are easier to lift, easier to pack and means that one
whole won't loose a significant amount of your water supply.
• Take a good set of
relevant maps and a compass. A GPS can be fun and even useful for escaping Sydney's traffic, but a
set of good maps are an option not reliant on batteries or you setting the
correct datum. But do make sure you know how to read the compass and the map.
• Snakes are an
well-advertised pest in Australia
- but you are far more likely to be driven crazy by the flies and mozzies. Make
sure your tent has an integrated floor and ever door and window is covered with
mesh. The flies go at sunset, though the mozzies are worst then. You don't
really want to eat until the flies go so you should make sure you have adequate
lights (electric, battery or gas-powered) to cook and eat by.
• If you do break down
never leave the vehicle. Ever. Under any circumstances. A vehicle can be
spotted from the air, a body cannot. A vehicle has lots of survival gear: like
tyres which can be burnt to guide searchers. It offers shade and more water
than you can possibly carry any distance. Water and shade will allow you to
survive for days.
• Know your vehicle: older
is better: most bush mechanics aren't familiar with modern electronics, nor do
they have a computer diagnostic setup. Buy a 20 year old vehicle and every male
over the age of 40 will have owned/fixed one before.
• In remote desert
communities petrol sniffing is a big issue. Some communities only allow
synthetic alternatives or diesel. A diesel vehicle is generally cheaper to run,
but more expensive to buy.
• Snakes are the dangerous
animal which most foreigners first associate with Australia. They are rare and shy
though: they won't attack unless cornered. Saltwater crocodiles on the other
hand are both aggressive and territorial. In northern Australia don't camp too near a
saltie.
• Beer bottles are heavy
to carry. Beer cans are better - but cans can get holes in them from the
continual vibration from dirt roads. Avoid this by wrapping every second can in
newspaper to avoid rubbing.

Australia is a continent with a very low population
density. It has a combined population of around only 21.3 million, with most of
the population living around the state capitals of Sydney,
Melbourne, Brisbane,
Adelaide and Perth,
as well as in Canberra.
Recently, immigration has been a vital factor in the nation’s development.
Around six million immigrants from different corners of the planet have come to
call this land home, along with 517,000 Aborigines, who are the nation’s
biggest minority group. The continent is also famous for being the home of
around 130 species of marsupials like koalas, kangaroos, and wombats.
Applying for an Australian tourist visa could be done by mail as well as
on the internet. The fees or applicable charges may differ when applying either
by mail, online or by going direct to an Australian consular office. Once you
fill up an application form and pay the necessary fees, you should now be able
to acquire the tourist visa, once it's approved. Ensure that you print all the
documents you receive, and bring this along with your other pertinent travel
papers.
